The core documents everyone needs
No matter who you are, keep these ready.
- PAN card. Your primary tax identity.
- Aadhaar card. Must be linked to your PAN, or you cannot file.
- Bank account details. Account number and IFSC for any refund.
- Form 26AS. A tax credit statement showing all TDS deducted against your PAN.
- AIS (Annual Information Statement). A fuller record of income the department already knows about, including interest, dividends and high-value transactions.
Form 26AS and the AIS matter more than people think. Your return should match them. If it does not, that mismatch is the most common reason for a tax notice.
Documents by type of filer
Salaried employees
- Form 16 from your employer. This is the single most important document. It shows your salary and the tax already deducted.
- Rent receipts and rental agreement, if you claim HRA.
- Home loan interest certificate, if you have a home loan.
- Investment proofs for 80C (ELSS, PPF, LIC, EPF) and 80D (health insurance).
Example. Sameer, a salaried engineer, kept only his Form 16 ready and started filing. Halfway through he realised he could claim his health insurance premium under 80D but did not have the premium receipt. He stopped, hunted for it for twenty minutes, and lost his flow. Five minutes of prep would have saved that.
Freelancers and consultants
- Bank statements showing your receipts.
- Invoices raised during the year.
- A record of business expenses if you claim actual expenses.
- Form 26AS to reconcile any TDS your clients deducted.
If you use presumptive taxation under Section 44ADA, you declare a percentage of receipts as income and need less detail, but keep your receipts record anyway.
Investors and traders
- Capital gains statement from your broker or mutual fund registrar. Most brokers give a ready tax P&L report.
- Contract notes if you need transaction-level detail.
- Dividend statements.
Small business owners
- Profit and loss account and balance sheet.
- GST returns if registered.
- Bank statements and expense records.
- Details of any advance tax paid.
Everyone claiming deductions
- 80C: PPF, ELSS, LIC, EPF, children’s tuition, principal on home loan.
- 80D: health insurance premium.
- 80TTA / 80TTB: savings account interest.
- Section 24: home loan interest.
- 80G: donation receipts.
Where to download each document
- Form 16: from your employer, usually by June.
- Form 26AS: log in to incometax.gov.in and open “e-File › Income Tax Returns › View Form 26AS”, or through your bank’s net banking.
- AIS: on incometax.gov.in under “Services › AIS”.
- Capital gains statement: from your broker app (for example, the tax P&L report) or the mutual fund registrar (CAMS or KFintech).
- Bank interest certificate: from your bank’s net banking or branch.
A useful habit: download Form 26AS and the AIS first, then collect the paperwork that matches what they show. That way nothing slips through.

What you do NOT need to attach
ITR filing is annexure-less. You do not upload these documents with your return. You keep them as proof in case the department asks later. So gather them to fill in the numbers, then store them safely for a few years.
Once your documents are ready, picking where to file is the next step. If you have only a Form 16, the free government portal works. If you have capital gains or business income, a platform that reads your documents saves time. See our guide to the best income tax filing platforms in India and, if you are leaning that way, our ClearTax review.
FAQ
What documents are required to file ITR for a salaried person?
PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank details, and proof of any deductions you claim such as HRA, home loan interest, 80C and 80D. Form 16 is the most important.
Do I need to upload documents while filing ITR?
No. ITR filing is annexure-less. You use the documents to fill in the figures and keep them as proof in case of a later query.
Where can I download Form 26AS and AIS?
Both are on the Income Tax portal at incometax.gov.in. Form 26AS is also available through most banks’ net banking.
What if my Form 16 and Form 26AS do not match?
Investigate before filing. Usually it is a timing difference in TDS. File based on your actual income and the correct figures, and keep proof.
Do freelancers need Form 16?
No. Freelancers do not get Form 16. They use bank statements, invoices, and Form 26AS to reconcile any TDS clients deducted.
